Sony's highest-resolution full-frame camera to date, the new Alpha 7R IV delivers stunning image quality with high resolution and a wide dynamic range, while maintaining outstanding focusing performance, high-speed continuous shooting, and much, much more.
A new level of image quality
The new Alpha 7R IV incorporates a newly developed 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with 61.0 MPii resolution, the world’s first of its kind. The new sensor’s back-illuminated structure and effective noise reduction techniques combine to deliver high-sensitivity performance with very low noise for the highest image quality. The camera also boasts an impressive 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivities, resulting in smooth, natural gradations from deep shadows to highlights, and utilizes algorithms from many of the latest Alpha™ cameras to maintain excellent color reproduction.
This new full-frame model is equipped with an innovative 5-axis optical built-in image stabilization system that has been fine-tuned to support its high-resolution shooting capability, resulting in a high shutter speed of 5.5 stops. In addition, the shutter unit assembly has been carefully redesigned to reduce even the slightest movement that can cause blurry images.
The Alpha 7R IV also includes Sony's highest-resolution viewfinder on any camera, a 5.76 million-dot UXGA OLED Tru-finder electronic viewfinder. With approximately 1.6 times the resolution of the Alpha 7R III's EVF, this new viewfinder provides an extremely accurate and realistic representation of the framed scene. Display quality can be adjusted to "Standard" or "High" mode, and to the refresh rate of 60 fps or 120 fps to best match the subject and shooting conditions.
Additionally, the new camera features a Pixel Shift Multi-Shoot mode[xi] that allows up to 16 full-resolution images to be composed. In this mode, the camera precisely shifts the sensor in 1 or 0.5 pixel increments to capture 16 separate pixel-shifted images containing a total of 963.2 million pixels of data, then converts this to a single 240.8 million pixel (19008 x 12672 pixel) image using the "Imaging Edge™" desktop application[xii]. Ideal for shooting architecture, art, or still lifes, this enhanced mode produces photos with a level of detail and color accuracy that is simply stunning.
Capture speed and focus
The innovative new Alpha 7R IV full-frame mirrorless camera can capture full-resolution images at up to 10 fpsiv with continuous, precise AF/AX tracking for approximately 7 secondsv in full-frame, full-resolution (JPEG/RAW) mode and approximately 3 seconds in APS-C crop mode, delivering 26.2 MPiii images. These high-speed options ensure that fast-moving subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and incredible image detail.
The Alpha 7R IV's updated focusing system consists of 567 focal-plane phase-detection AF points covering approximately 74% of the image area. There are also 425 contrast AF points that add additional accuracy and reliability for low-light and other situations best used with contrast AF. The increased AF sensor density and refined tracking algorithms in the new camera result in a noticeable improvement in tracking performance, enabling reliably tracking the motion of complex subjects and sudden subject movements with greater precision than ever before.
The Alpha 7R IV also supports Real-time Eye AF, which employs artificial intelligence to detect and process eye location data in real time, locking onto the subject’s eye with extreme precision. This is available for both animals and humans, with the option to select Human or Animal Eye AF mode depending on the shooting situation. Additionally, Real-time Tracking (vii) is also available, which utilizes a newly developed subject recognition algorithm to ensure definitive subject tracking and focus persistence. It also features an Anti-Flicker (xiv) shooting mode, which automatically detects the presence of fluorescent or artificial lighting in a shooting environment to minimize any impact on the final image.
Enhanced connectivity for professional workflows
Sony’s new Alpha 7R IV full-frame camera is equipped with a host of advanced connectivity features designed to enhance professional workflows. The new model includes wireless LAN functionality supporting both the conventional 2.4 GHz band as well as a high-speed 5 GHz band[xiii] for faster and more stable data transfers. Wireless remote PC connectivity (Wireless Tethered Shooting)viii is also available on the new Alpha 7R IV – a first for Sony cameras. Requested by many professionals, this will enable greater freedom in studio and on-location shoots, allowing the photographer to move freely without restriction. In addition to high-speed Wi-Fi® and wireless PC connectivityviii, the new full-frame camera is equipped with a SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.2 Gen 1) with USB Type-C™ connector that supports extremely fast wired data transmission, with a data transfer speed nearly twice as fast in combination with Imaging Edge software compared to the Alpha 7R III, plus FTP data transfer with background transfer capability, allowing photographers to send images to a dedicated remote FTP server while continuing to shoot or review images. To facilitate a high-speed and efficient connected professional workflow, Sony has announced version 2.0 of the “Imaging Edge” desktop applications (“Remote”/“Viewer”/“Edit”)xii. The “Remote” application allows users to control the cameras and monitor live shooting on the PC screen; The "Viewer" app is used to quickly preview, sort, and select photos from large libraries, and the "Edit" app can develop RAW data into high-quality photos for delivery. To maximize image transfer convenience, when using the latest version of Sony's Imaging Edge Mobile™ app[xiv], the camera can transfer images to a connected smartphone even if the camera is turned off.[xv]
Professional video recording and high-resolution 4K features
In addition to its impressive photography capabilities, the new Alpha 7R IV offers exceptional performance as a video recording tool, supporting 4K recording (3840 x 2160 pixels) and full pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35 mmix mode. This ensures high-quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 are also available to maximize color grading flexibility, with S-Log 3 offering a total of 14 stops of dynamic range. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)xviii is also available on the Alpha 7R IV to support an instant HDR workflow.
For video autofocus, the versatile new full-frame camera uses a Fast Hybrid AF system that achieves faster, smoother, and more stable autofocus during video recording, even if an object temporarily moves in front of the desired subject. The camera also includes Touch Tracking during video recording, allowing the user to tap the screen on the desired subject for instant capture.
The new Alpha 7R IV features Real-time Eye AF for video recording vi, a first for any Sony camera. When activated, it automatically tracks a subject's eyes with high accuracy and reliability, allowing the user to focus on the content itself, rather than what is or is not in focus. Touch Tracking also automatically initiates Eye AF when a human subject is selected.
Another notable video feature is the addition of a digital audio interface to the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe™, allowing direct connection of the new ECM-B1M shotgun microphone or the XLR-K3M XLR adapter kit for clear, low-noise, high-quality audio recording. Interval recording for creating time-lapse movies is available, as well as Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, slow and quick motion functionsxix, and much more.
Improved design, customization, and creation
The new Alpha 7R IV features several improvements to its design and usability, with many tweaks implemented directly from feedback from Sony's professional community.
To maximize durability, the new Alpha 7R IV features improved dust and moisture resistance, with additional sealing at all body joints, the battery compartment cover, and the mount slots. The camera is constructed from an extremely lightweight and durable magnesium alloy and features an improved, ultra-sturdy six-screw mount.
Additional body design improvements include an improved grip for increased comfort and a more secure hold in the hand, an increased diameter and responsiveness of the AF-ON button, a newly designed multi-selector lever for on-the-fly control, an exposure compensation dial lock button, and a redesigned shape and new position for the rear dial.
