Monochrome-specific CMOS image sensor

To optimize the quality of monochrome images, the camera incorporates a dedicated APS-C-format monochrome CMOS image sensor without an AA (anti-aliasing) filter with approximately 25.73 effective megapixels. Typical color image sensors are designed to receive light passing through red (R), green (G), and blue (B) color filters, so each pixel detects only one component of color data. To compose a monochrome image, color sensors must convert color data into monochrome data by interpolating the collected color data. However, the new dedicated monochrome image sensor can faithfully reflect the brightness data obtained by each image pixel, without the interpolation process, to produce extra-fine monochrome expression in high-resolution images rich in gradation.

Image quality designed exclusively for monochrome photography

The image quality produced by the original PENTAX K-3 Mark III has been completely re-evaluated and completely redesigned to optimize the imaging characteristics of the new dedicated monochrome image sensor. The result is highly sensitive expression with natural bokeh (blurring), rich gradation, and extra-fine sharpness—an image that only the dedicated monochrome image sensor can deliver.

A selection of specific monochromatic finishes

The PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome offers three custom picture modes designed exclusively for monochrome photography to provide distinctive finishing touches.

In addition to the standard mode, it also offers a high-contrast imaging mode and a soft mode for creating high-key and low-contrast images. Each mode provides fine-tuning of parameters such as tone, key, contrast, and sharpness. This allows the photographer to customize their images with the desired finishing touch.
